Summit’s Energy Assessment is Ticket to $475,000 in Savings for Theme Park

Learn why a national theme park turned to its energy consultant, Summit Energy, to assess possibilities to lower energy usage and cost. Summit’s experienced engineers identified energy efficiency projects that would drive more than $475,000 in savings for the theme park.

Thorough Energy Assessments Result in Big Savings: It’s a common scene at facilities all over the globe: Outside lights are left on during the day and equipment is running when operations are closed. Such unnecessary energy use quickly adds up. A thorough site assessment by a trained efficiency professional can uncover multiple opportunities to lower costs and create a more energy-efficient workplace.

SITUATION
Given that energy costs at theme parks can be as high as $4 million a year, it was no wonder that a national theme park wanted to lower its energy usage. The park engaged Summit Energy to assess savings opportunities at its 2,200-acre site in the northeastern U.S. Over the course of four days, Summit’s experienced engineering team analyzed equipment and processes, which included the park's pumping systems, insulation and air compressors.

LEADERSHIP
Summit was quick to find several opportunities to save money and energy. During an assessment of one of the larger roller coasters, Summit noticed that even when the ride was closed for maintenance, its air compressor continued to operate. Simply turning off the compressor when the ride was not operating resulted in immediate savings. Furthermore, Summit recommended that the compressor be turned off during the park’s lengthy off-season. This one small change resulted in more than $26,000 in annual savings.

RESULTS
Summit’s recommendations included changes that required no capital investment, such as turning off compressors, and other changes that required an investment from the park. Once implemented, the strategies added more than $475,000 to the theme park’s bottom line. Furthermore, the total savings from changes requiring no capital investment more than paid for the fee of the entire site assessment.
